Zambia  - by Bethan Wyn Owen, Y Felinheli

I recently had an amazing experience when a friend and I visited teachers and pupils in a community school in Mkushi, Zambia.

The opportunity to volunteer rose when we met and discussed it with Tony Foster, who was responsible for the Itala Foundation here in Wales.

While we were there we had an opportunity to teach children as well as adults, and free time to socialise with the people of the village, and familiarise ourselves with the area around us.

We lived in a way that was traditional to the country for 5 weeks, enjoyed Nshima meals (after we prepared it on the fire!) washed our clothes in the river and washed and cleaned our hair in the well.

Being in such an underprivileged village was a real eye opener, I felt great sadness when we had to leave the village of Mkushi and the children at Itala school, and move on to continue our travelling.

I would like to thank everyone for their support and kindness towards me as I prepared to leave, and to everyone who contributed in any way.
